The Friends of Mar Vista Library (FoMVL) was established in 1983 by local children’s author Taffy Cannon, a self professed “book junkie”, and local community members. Initially founded to run bi-annual book sales, the organization has evolved to meet the needs of the Mar Vista Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library as it services the Mar Vista neighborhood.

Today, FoMVL continue to raise funds to enhance the Library’s collection and support events beyond the Library’s annual budget. It also advocate for literacy through sponsoring reading programs, represent the community in decisions on Library services & collections, and host recognition events for the staff and volunteers who make the Mar Vista Library a dynamic hub.

The Friends celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2024 and received a proclamation from the City of Los Angeles recognizing the organization’s service in enabling the community and library to thrive.
